: Signs and Symptoms of Alcohol Addiction Relapse
The main goal of alcohol addiction treatment is to maintain long term sobriety. Today, there is a growing concern about the high relapse rate among alcoholic patients.
Among post-rehab patient studies, it was found that the main cause of relapse is not exactly craving, but depression. Here are the signs and symptoms that you or your loved ones are falling into the trap of alcohol addiction relapse:
• Hopelessness- You start to feel that you are alone, and you have noone to turn to. The problems seem to have no solutions at all.
• Depressed- You feel so low and hopeless. Depression sets in and you may begin to have suicidal thoughts.
• Increased urge and cravings- You may begin to think about drinking and the thought of it makes you convinced that drinking makes you feel better. You may start believing that the problems are the reason to start drinking again.
• Denial- You startto be secretive again and avoid opening up about their problems to other people. You think that everything is still okay eventhough it is not.
• Experiencing of post acute withdrawal symptoms- You still havevarious issues, including emotional overreaction problems, thinking difficulties, memory difficulties, sleep disturbances, and becoming prone to accident.
• Defensive- You ignore people who are truly concerned about you. You tend to be mad with them when you hear about honest feedback from them.
• Lower stress threshold- You become overwhelmed with simple everyday problems and find it hard to solve them on your own. Problems seem like unending and no solutions.
• Impulsive behavior- You may lose control of any of the following: caffeine, food, work, gambling, drugs, alcohol, sex, etc. You may also become irrational and would not care whatever would be the consequences of your actions or decisions.
Alcohol addiction is treatable, but relapse is always possible. As it is a continuous battle, getting long term sobriety is achievable with the help and support of family members and professional support groups.
You must also learn how to avoid the various factors that may trigger chances of relapse:
• Boredom
• Drug addiction
• Physical pain
• Presence of drugs/ alcohol; Being near with drug addicts or alcoholics
• Depression/ sad stories/ experiences
• Celebrations that could make you want to drink and try drugs
• Receiving huge amount of money
• Prescription drug addiction
Some people also think that they have already overcome their alcohol addiction, so they may start to drink again. However, in reality, they have not yet fully attain sobriety.
